Malting news UK: Muntons plc gets top marks in BRC audit

Muntons plc, the Stowmarket based Maltster and Malted Ingredient manufacturer, announced in February 2006 that they have been successful in achieving BRC Global Standard Grade A - the highest grade achievable following a recent BRC audit. This covers both the Malted Ingredients division, where a wide variety of malted products are made for the food, baking and confectionary markets, and our Stowmarket Malt division, who make malt for the worldwide brewing and distilling industries.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has recently updated and revised the BRC Global Standard to Issue 4 - Food, which sets stringent standards for food and ingredient manufacturers and retailers. This revised standard replaces the old BRC Global Standard (Issue 3 - Food) and came into force during 2005.

The headquarters of Muntons plc is based in the county of Suffolk on the outskirts of the market town of Stowmarket, strategically located near to our main raw material - premium quality malting barley - and ideally positioned to access the UK's major port of Felixstowe and the major road route into the heart of England.

“Additionally we have a second manufacturing plant in Bridlington, Yorkshire, also located in one of the prime malting barley growing areas in the UK. Muntons purchase over 200,000 tonnes of UK assured grains annually and have a combined output of over 220,000 tonnes of malted products per year. Malted ingredients are used in a wide variety of applications within the food and baking industries and malt is the primary raw material in brewing and distilling.

We export malted ingredients and malt to over 50 countries worldwide, are the largest malted ingredient producer in the world and one of the five largest sales maltsters in the UK.

Each year our Stowmarket headquarters produces in excess of 70,000 tonnes of malt and 27,000 tonnes of malt extract, with a capacity to manufacture 6,000 tonnes of Spraydried and band dried extract per year. We supply over 3,000 tonnes into the home beer-making market and have a 10,000 tonne malt flour milling and malted cereal flaking operation.

We are committed to maintaining the highest standard for hygiene. Our Stowmarket plant is accredited to the British Retail Consortium (BRC) global food standard and all the malt that we sell is produced under the independently audited Assured UK malt scheme. We take pride in operating a full ethical and environmental policy.”
